Defining Trust
With suspicion surrounding the role played by his trusted personal physician in the last hours of Michael Jackson’s life and growing anxiety relating to how our trusted politicians and leaders make decisions in relation to the environment, it is perhaps timely to look at what trust means.
Among the many definitions, trust has many meanings, most of which translate to a strong relationship of reliance on someone else to act in someone else’s best interests. Consider the following expressions of trust and then reflect on the two situations above:
- Placement of trust allows actions that otherwise are not possible (i.e. trust allows actions to be conducted based on incomplete information on the case in hand) – James S. Coleman
- A man who doesn't trust himself can never really trust anyone else – Cardinal De Retz
- Trust is an action that involves a voluntary transfer of resources (physical, financial, intellectual, or temporal) from the truster to the trustee with no real commitment from the trustee – James S. Coleman
- To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved – George MacDonald.
